On September 21, 2019, the University of Calgary's Faculty of Science hosted a one-day event at the Central Library in downtown Calgary called “Science Takeover”, an event aimed at sparking exploration and curiosity in science. The ECS Calgary Student Chapter organized a booth to showcase electrochemical applications, in which they demonstrated fruit and vegetable operated batteries using lemons, limes, apples, bananas, tomatoes and potatoes as the electrolyte. Over 3000 participants attended the event, including kids and their parents. Attendees were asked to guess which fruit/vegetable battery would work, and then completed the circuit to light up an LED bulb. For each option, the participants also measured the cell potential with a voltmeter to determine which fruit or vegetable was the best battery. Additionally, an educational “mini” fuel cell car was demonstrated at the booth.
